It’s May which means it’s time to try some new cupcake flavors! Both Cupcake Royale and Trophy Cupcakes got ready for Cinqo de Mayo with their margarita cupcakes.
True to the past, Cupcake drew me in with a free cupcake with drink purchase coupon on the 1st. This time I was offered an Italian soda instead of coffee when I mentioned I didn’t drink coffee and I couldn’t have been be happier with that!
Their margarita cupcakes has a lemon cake base, then a simple swirl of tequila lime buttercream with a rim of green salt & sugar and a cocktail umbrella garnish. Add this to your happy hour list because the frosting is boozy! Not that that’s a bad thing. While I’m not sure why they decided on a lemon cake when making a lime cake couldn’t be much harder, it was a great cupcake. The cocktail umbrella made it!
Trophy’s take on the margarita began with a lime cupcake, topped with tequila lime frosting, candied lime zest and salt! The zest was a great decoration but I kept thinking I had discovered something unnatural in the frosting. The entire concoction was very lime-y, it all went together very well and had great flavor.
If you can’t decide I’d choose your cupcake like I’d choose your drink. If you like your margaritas frozen with a sugar rim Trophy has got you covered. If you’re like me and like your margaritas strong, on the rocks and salted, it’s Cupcake Royale for sure. Everyone has their preference, and I love that the two were different adaptations of the same flavor, enough to make distinctions between them. If you still can’t decide you can always get both. Two margaritas are better than one.
